A Passage to India Essay -- Literary Analysis
E.M. Forster, born into a middle-class family in London, was a humanist and an English writer famous for his literary works which called attention to the hypocrisy (present in the time in which he lived). In his novel A Passage To India, Forster explores the relationship between and within the Anglo-Indian and Native-Indian communities under British Imperialism and expounds on the sins which its members commit against the humanistic values of sympathy and understanding. Additionally, in A Passage to India Forster reflects the relationship phases which occur between his characters through the use of the three main divisions -- Mosque, Caves, and Temple. The First division Mosque, a Muslim place of worship, is set in the fictional city of Chandrapore and brings about the first stage of human confrontation --Introduction. One of the first introductions Forster makes to the reader is the division of the Indian and British cultures. He does this by describing Indian Chandrapore to be a place where the ââ¬Å"streets are mean, the temples ineffective, and though a few fine houses exist they are hidden away in gardens or down alleys whose filth deters all but the invited guest.â⬠(Forster 3) while describing British Chandrapore ââ¬Å"to be a totally different place. It is a city of gardens. It is no city, but a forest sparsely scattered with huts. It is a tropical pleasaunce washed by a noble riverâ⬠(Forster 4). The idea of ââ¬Ëintroductionsââ¬â¢ is further explored in Dr. Azizââ¬â¢s visit to the mosque which lets ââ¬Å"loose his imagination..where his body and thoughts have found their homeâ⬠(Forster 16), whe re the ââ¬Å"many small sounds [of the] English...amateur orchestra...Hindus drumming...owlsâ⬠(Forster 17), all diverse in nature, echoed through a similar space... ...d apart; the earth didnââ¬â¢t want it, sending up rocks through which riders must pass single file; the temples, the tanks the jail, the place, the birds, the carrion, the Guest House...didnââ¬â¢t want it, they said...ââ¬â¢no, not yet,ââ¬â¢ and the sky said, ââ¬ËNo, not thereââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ (Forster 362). Periclesââ¬â¢ Ideology of Democratic Society. à à à à à Democracy of today can be traced back to the Funeral Oration speech of Periclesââ¬Ë. We can outline the ideology behind democracy from his speech. Democracy is now the largest form of government to exist in todayââ¬â¢s society. There are two forms of democracyââ¬â¢s that exist: Representational which is used by the United States, and Direct which allows the people to get involved and was used by the Greeks. So its said that Athenian democracy are more democratic than ours. Some even say that Periclesââ¬â¢ speech is the foundation of democratic society. à à à à à The speech of Periclesââ¬â¢ was not only a tribute to those who died in battle but it was also a contrast between the warring powers of Athens and Sparta, recorded by the historian Thucydides. In Athens society it was custom for someone of the community to give an acclamation speech for those who died in war. Periclesââ¬â¢ was chosen and gave a spectacular speech which sounds a lot like the speeches we hear today from other leaders of a democratic government. Periclesââ¬â¢ speaks about the special qualities and characteristics of the Athenians, and the faults of the Spartans. à à à à à The theme of the speech is the thought that the Athenians were able to put aside what they want and strive for the greater good of the city. They are brought together by their mutual trust and a shared desire for freedom. Athenians submit to the laws and obey the public officials not because they have to, but because they want to. Athenians had achieved something unique ,being both ruled and rulers at one and the same time. This helped to create a new type of civilian. Athenians were able to adapt to any situation and rise to any challenge. à à à à à Athenian law was not all written in books, based on peoples judgment the laws were administered on the guilty. According to Periclesââ¬â¢ ââ¬Å"Our Constitution does not copy the laws of neighboring states; we are rather a model to others than imitators ourselves,â⬠this quote shows the Constitution is an inspiration to other government systems.

Before analyzing influence of Steve Jobs on Apple and relate it with leadership theories, it is necessary to define leadership and its theories. Definition : Leadership is an interaction between two or members of a group that often involves structuring of the situation and the perceptions, expectation of members. Leaders are agent of change-person whose acts affect other people more than other people's act affect them. Leadership occurs when one group member modifies the motivation or competencies of others in the group. In fact, some peo ple are able to lead naturally while others, leadership skills are built up through hard work and practice. According to Stogdill's studies, there are 5 elements which modify effective leader traits : Capacity, Achievement, Responsibility, Participation, Status. (Bloisi et al. , 2007) In addition, 4 leader decision styles were classified include : Autocratic, Democratic, Laissez-faire, Human relation. (Bloisi et al. , 2007) Although, leader's success also depends on how they interact with various circumstances that influence the tasks to be undertaken. A range of researches was pointed out, however some popular theories have known( contingency theories). Firstly, The Fiedler contingency model-matching leader style and situational favorableness factors. It includes (Bloisi et al. , 2007) Task structure ââ¬â the degree to which the duty are formalised and planned; Position power ââ¬â the degree of influence a leader has over activities such as recruitment, authority, promotion and increasing salary; Leader-member relations ââ¬â the degree of confidence, trust and respect inferiors have for the leader . Secondly, Hersey and Blanchard's (1996) situational leadership theory ââ¬â matching leader behaviours to followers' needs. Based on combinations of the leader's task and relationship behaviours as moderated by the job maturity of followers. (Bloisi et al. , 2007). It includes: Task behaviours ââ¬â organising and defining roles, structure, channel of communication; Relationship behaviours ââ¬â relationship with inferiors by opening channel of communication and supporting. Thirdly, Path-goal theory ( House and Mitchell, 1974) : a leader should clarify goals, show acceptable paths for attaining goals, make the path easier to travel, and reward satisfactory performance. (Bloisi et al. , 2007). It includes: Directive leadership (highly task orientated)- provide guidance and how indentified performance standards and time schedules as well as policies; Achievement-orientated leadership (high task and relationship orientated) ââ¬â challenge purpose is built up, seeks performance upgrading ; Participative leadership ( moderately task and highly relationship orientated ) ââ¬â consulting with and soliciting the ideas of others in decision-making; Supportive leadership (highly relationship orientated) -concern for the needs and purposes of others and strives to make the work conditions satisfying and equitable. Additionally, there are 2 styles among several leadership styles which modify model of leaders. Firstly, Transactional leadership ââ¬â using bureaucratic authority and incentives to motivate, focusing on rewards according to Bass theory. Secondly, Charismatic leadership ââ¬â â⬠heroic â⬠leadership ; the ability to energize interiors through the use of symbols, visionary, stories and rhetoric to achieve at extraordinary levels, typically having a vision and a reason for the future , advanced by Weber (1947). Such information have demonstrated some traits and processes of leadership in an organisation. In fact , they are also traits which fit in Apple case. Its success story began in 1976, when Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniaks launched their own business, the Apple Computer Company, in Jobs' family garage. At that time, he was 21, then by the age of 25 , Jobs obsessed $165 million . The increase of Apple's success quickly which put the first landmark in his line of business. (Campbell, 2011) In 1985, he got out of the way of Apple when John Sculley , who came from Pepsi-Cola, had joined. Four years later, Jobs came back with another company, NextStep which achieved far away from the success of Apple but it recalled people that he would continued in his way. Later, he secondly started with his participation in Pixar- the animation company he purchased from the Star Wars director, George Lucas. The first success of Pixar is movie Toy Story which lead to its position as one of the key player in Hollywood, then launching movie Finding Nemo. Its success made Jobs a billionaire and prepared for his coming back Apple in 1997. Within one year , the ailing company was once more making huge profits. However, his journey didn't stop at that point. Since the combination of high-speed Internet and the music industry has opened a new segment for getting profit by downloading music . Jobs believe that iTunes is the answer. Additionally, Ipad2 is leader in digital book and tablet segment now. (Campbell, 2011) Steve Jobs is really an effective leader, an important person in development of Apple. In many way , his traits fit in charismatic leadership. Firstly, an ideology is showed clearly, often using labels and slogans, He offered a vivid and positive image of the future. For instance, he used the slogan as well as the iconic logo of the Mac team:â⬠Pirates! Not the Navy ââ¬Å"to build up Mac team( a group specializes design new products) (Elliot, Jay; L. Simon,William, 2011, p. 38). Being pirate, employees should think differently and act as revolution. His goal and passion are perfect products. He concerned about every details of products carefully until it was launched. This is an ideological image which he and his team follow, becomes a motivation in the whole company. By articulating an ideological vision and recruiting a number of talents who share the values of the vision, he develops the company. Secondly, he showed clear structure to reach his goal as well as increases positive values and suggest linkages between expected behaviors from interiors with his vision of the future. For example, he formed the Mac group would never raise more than a hundred people because it was easy to fall into the danger of free flowing of ideas, barriers of communication among employees. He had a plan to guarantee everyone has the same wavelength and the same direction, setting a standard of doing each task for each staff (Elliot, Jay; L. Simon,William, 2011, p. 38). He ordered the team to create a whole new prototype of the computer using different chip, the Motorola 68000, which featured a lager memory. Another case, he forced people do his direction by calling meetings, setting new paths, adding new people into Mac team to move the cursor with some kind of control device . It led to moving the cursors with the mouse , clicking o make collection, dragging a file or icon (Elliot, Jay; L. Simon,William, 2011, p. 15). That was the fundamentals of the way we use computers today. Also, he was always finding for something specific from each group to link the quality he wanted. He brought out the creative talent in several people and guided them to work in harmony as well as encouraged open discussion. These characters also fit with Task behaviors of Hersey and Blanchard theory and Task structure of Fielder theory. Because both theories are quite similar , they show clear structure and aim to lead employees follow. H In fact, effective leader does not rely on one leadership style to manage company. Transaction leadership style also contain in this case. He has focused on achieving the tasks at hand. Jobs has got things done by making, and fulfilling, promises of recognition, and advancement for employees who have performed well. By contrast, employees who do not do good work are penalized. This promise and reward for good performance, or threat and discipline for poor performance. For example, he set up product retreats into the actual work agenda, opening them every three months for the whole growing Mac team. Every member was expected to be present. One by one, each team manager for hard ware, soft ware, marketing, sales, finance, PR would present a brief status report and time line , explaining where they were in term of agenda. If their team was falling behind , they would be criticized and given some suggestions for how they could overcome (Elliot, Jay; L. Simon,William, 2011, p. 43). Everybody was free to give suggestions. Besides, he decided that the signatures of the engineering team members would be put on the inside of the case of the first Mac. It's also a gift or recognition from him to interiors. Another case, achievement- oriented leadership consist with his traits, he was always discovering imperfections in everything , from the design to the marketing and packaging , to how the product would be promoted and sold. He always asked: â⬠At the first grade levelâ⬠(Elliot, Jay; L. Simon,William, 2011, p. 21) . In a story, he had decided early on that the cell phone being developed at Apple would have only a single button but his engineers couldn't carry out , then, he kept demanding in effect : â⬠The phone will have a single button. Figure it outâ⬠(Elliot, Jay; L. Simon,William, 2011, p. 23). By high demanding, we have iPhone 4 with only a single button today. In addition, he is autocratic decision style because he always gave duty for others and decided quickly. However, he is a relation behaviors and supportive leader. He focused on the slogan: â⬠We are all in this togetherâ⬠by bringing people from different aspects to meet each others in celebrations and to make a satisfaction work place such as allowing to work free of usual restrictions (Elliot, Jay; L. Simon,William, 2011, p. 40). Apple would become known as a company that celebrated just about everything: meeting goal, sales growth, new product introduction, new key people. In 1981, Bandley Drive building , a part of the center was a large atrium (Elliot, Jay; L. Simon,William, 2011, p. 50). It had a piano, video games huge fridge stocked with bottles of fruit juice . It was quickly became a place for the employees to meet and hang out. Finally, his case consist with leader member relations theory. Because of all of his passion and actions , followers have a strong respect and trust to him. Talents would be attracted by talents, that is explanation for Why Apple attracted many genius engineers and developed nowadays. At last but not least, that is the innovation of Steve Jobs in the whole business context. Technologies which he developed and advanced in NextStep and Pixar were applied on Apple Inc. That is really a basic for Apple's success . He always plays an important role in making right decision as the statement about leader and manager : Leader do the right thing , manager do the thing right. (Bloisi et al. , 2007) Conclusions Steve Jobs is criticized as an effective leader in the world. His famous and the well known of Apple remain together and will keep an important position in world trade. He is a part of success of Apple Inc and a leader in significant decision of development of his company. Understanding Apple Inc case and its market as well as an important leader- Steve Jobs will make us be aware of some traits of leadership in many theories deeply. His leadership style are : Task behaviors of Hersey and Blanchard theory and Task structure of Fielder theory, Charismatic leadership and Transaction leadership as well as Relation behaviors and Supportive leader. So that, it is realization that an successful leader always exists different leadership styles. Leaders always change their leadership style flexibility which is suitable for each task and each circumstance. Recommendations A part of the success of Apple based on Steve Jobs but it is dangerous if lack of this key leader. Besides, Job also shows that he is impatient person. So, it is considered seriously that Apple should give structure and motivation for employees as well as the whole company clearly and make it become tradition. Also, it is necessary to improve workplace such as improving workplace conditions in China and invest more in charity segment as Microsoft. It is useful to promote Apple's image. As neo-classical-type adjustment or marginal changes could not effectively salute the p roblem at hand, planning was conceive of as a necessary means of developing macroeconomic targets and providing the organizing efforts and amity requisite for the preferences of society to be recognized. In the economic management of both the more developed and less developed countries, a good deal of controversy has surrounded Keyness advocacy of more state intervention. As he wrote in his Essays in Persuasion, I think that capitalism, sagely managed, can probably be made more efficient for attaining economic ends than any alternative transcription yet in sight, but that in itself, it is in many ways extremely objectionable. Our problem is to work out a social organization which shall be as efficient as possible without offending our notions of a adapted way of life. Contextually, Keynes rejection of laissez-faire cannot be construed as an support of the bureaucratic type of planning that was once popular in former socialist countries and the developing world. The issue had sur faced passim the celebrated Socialist Calculation debate of the interwar years as a means of conveying why a decentralized market economy is probable to provide a greater degree of socio-economic coordination than a central one. Specifically, Nobel Laureate Friedrich Hayek (1935) had argued that growing policy-making involvement in the economic system would ultimately lead to totalitarian dictatorship.Hayekian anti-Keynesianism was to add in the idea of a dirigiste dogma, or the potential dangers innate in government solutions to economic and social problems. Yet, it can be contradicted that the dogma was perhaps more minded(p) to his disciples than to Keynes himself. As, his analysis of the British economy throughout the thirties was based on assumptions concerning keen-wittedly functioning markets. The case for planning was seeent to the concern of a macroeconomic material in which microeconomic choices could be somewhat orchestrated. The guiding viewpoint was that in th e absence seizure of a proper macroeconomic enabling environment, markets will engender the kind of stagnancy implied in underemployment equilibrium. At the international level, as a result, the counter-revolution was translated into a revisionist loom to North-South dealings based on an extolment of the advantages of Adam Smiths imperceptible hand over the difficulties of the visible hand of statism. Contextually, the poverty of development economics has been recognise to the policy induced, and thus far from expected distortions formed by irrational dirigisme (Lal 1983 1).In his view, formal development economics was not hardly too dogmatic and dirigiste in its orientation, but also sustained by a number of fallacies, including (i) the judgment that the price-market mechanism must be displaced rather than supplemented (ii) that the efficiency gains from enhance allocation of given resources are quantitatively irrelevant (iii) that the case for lighten address overlooks soundness for developing countries (iv) that government project of prices, wages, imports, and the allocation of productive assets is a crucial prerequisite for poverty improvement and (v) that rational maximizing behavior by economic agents is not a common phenomenon. overly advocating a smaller role for the state, Lal also joins hands with Hayek in arguing that nonentity must be done about income distribution. We cannot . . . identify equity and efficiency as the sole ends of social welfare . . . new(prenominal) ends such as liberty are also valued. . .. And if redistribution entails costs in terms of other social ends which are evenly valued it would be foolish to rebuff them and concentrate solely on the rigorously economic ends (Lal 1983 89). This argument can be construed to mean that no matter how goodly the welfare gains that are probable to devolve from redistributive policies, no liberty is ever worthy trading or forfeiting. Besides the ideological tunnel vision that lies at the titty of such a claim, it can be argued that the potential of attaining authentic development depend as much on the sensibility of the state to distributive justice as on the competence and locative goals disquieted in neoclassical economics or the liberty that is the focus of new classical political economy.Peter Bauer, another inner stick out in the counter-revolution, challenges the major variations in economic structure and levels of developmental attainment among countries must be explained in terms of equivalent differences in resource endowments and individualistic orientations. This viewpoint rests on a basic belief that the inherent potentials of individuals can be raddled out throughout the play of market forces. Contextually, he states (1981 8s), the precise causes of differences in income and wealthiness are complex and various. . . . In substance such differences result from peoples widely differing attitudes and motivations, and also to some ext ent from chance circumstances. Some people are gifted, hardworking, ambitious, and enterprising, or had farsighted parents, and they are more likely to become swell up off. In turn, such attributes are metric accountable for the East Asian victory stories, or a demonstration of the rectitude and correctness of the individualistic unload market approach to economic development. In more general terms, the achievement of these countries is construe as a substantiation of the domain assumptions of neo-classical economic theory that competent growth can be promoted by relying on free markets, getting prices to replicate real scarcities, liberalizing craft policy, and authorizing international price signals to be more generously transmitted to the domestic economy. On the whole idea, therefore, is that market-oriented systems with private incentives lean to tape a superior performance in terms of growth attainment. In general, critics of the dirigiste dogma such as Hayek, Lal, and Bauer assert that, compared to countries in the more developed division of the world, most governments in the less developed sector lack the type of knowledge and data call for for rational intervention, are often less democratic, and often exhibit motives that are at inconsistency with Keynesian-type or structuralist objectives of growth with redeployment and full employment. The reaction is that markets in both sectors of the world are less liberate than is usually supposed, lack the capability for making rational decisions, and particularly in the developing world, not always adequately unionized to effectively convey the essential price signals. There is numerous element of righteousness in both the anti-Keynesian and Keynesian/structuralist perspectives. Where the equipoise is lastly drawn becomes an issue of ideology and slanted judgment rather than scientific economic analysis. In any event, the rails followed by any particular verdant is typically constrained by its h istoric and socio-cultural situation. In addition, the obstruction of local forms of industrial development led to the configuration of a new middle class of petit bourgeoisie comprising the States officials, government bureaucrats, civil servants, teachers, and related cadres. In certain regions and countries, they integrated small traders, liberalist farmers, middle peasants, and similar groups that come to let increasing importance in the absence of meaningful industrialization. They were to become the prime advocates of state capitalism and other forms of national developmentalism. In conclusion, approximately all states in the developing world are domineering in varying degrees. Several are classic cases of the predator or rentier state in which everything is part of a rulers individual fiefdom and high offices are up for sale to the highest bidders. There are a few cases, yet, where governments have schematic some measure of institutional consistency in the detection of co llective development goals. Needless to say, the situation diverges from one historic or political framework to another. The majority of developing countries have no relief pitcher but to rely on a strong and focused government to be out a strategic development way. The obstinate theoretical and practical question relics why different types of interventionist states with command over similar resources and instruments of control tend to show extremely disputeing development orientations and end up on dissimilar development paths. The consensual view is that the great majority have remained regulatory or resister and are far back on the road to becoming real development states that portray the vision and capability need to promote necessary development goals. acquirement of the latter depending not so much on the dimension of the government weapon but more on its quality and efficiency. This has been established by the development stupefy of Nordic and East Asian countries, whi ch have been thriving in meshing interventionist schemes with the market mechanism, as well as in cultivation resilient coalitions of modernizing interests in the structuring of national development agendas. Traditionally, such coalitions have upshot their integrity, credibility, and political legality from the nations collective aspirations. The centralization of decision making has been efficiently feature with flexibility in dealing with skillful and market conditions. Goals and policies have been continually interpreted and reinterpreted on the basis of organizational networks amidst party organizations, public officials, and private entrepreneurs. This is not meant to propose that what has worked in the flourishing corporatist models of the Nordic countries and the Sinitic world, particularly Japan, can or should be replicated in the late-developing world. In the first place, the social and cultural homogeneity in both regions have made the counterfeiting of a political con sensus much easier.Second, the tensions that continuously arise between the spoken interests of organized classes, pressure groups, and the state influential responsible for policy formulation and implementation cannot be end in a context free or institutionally neutral manner. The state remains a strategic thespian in the game of mixed conflict and cooperation amongst other groups (Bardhan 1988 65). Under the conditions, the record of developmental outcomes eventually depends on its ability to form conflicts and make compromises in an open political milieu. The directness of the political process determines the nature and efficacy of the development delivery system and the degree to which consensual relationships can be recognized and nurtured with labor, business, peoples organizations, and the rustic sector.
